Abstract Detail

Geology and Plant Life: the growing legacy of Arthur Kruckeberg

Olmstead, Richard [1].

The life and legacy of Art Kruckeberg, all purpose botanist.

Art Kruckeberg was a plant systematist and geobotanist, but introduced himself to others as an "all-purpose botanist."  From his childhood in Los Angeles in a family where the business was publishing about gardens to his extended retirement devoted to his personal garden, now a public landmark, his life was devoted to plants and often with an eye to their public appreciation.   Whereas this symposium is devoted to a field of endeavor spawned by Art's interest in the interplay between plants and their substrate, his contributions to conservation, horticulture, and public outreach made him an icon in the Pacific Northwest.
