This two-phase study seeks a better understanding of the current ranges, hybrid forms, habitat preferences, overall stand health, population structure, and responses to climate change of three species of alder (Alnus) in the Willamette Valley, Oregon. All three species of alder in this study provide critical ecological and economic functions as nitrogen-fixing early colonizers of riparian zones, forested wetlands and mesic forest slopes. Major shifts in the ranges of these species are occurring – in particular, both northerly species A. rubra and A. incana appear to be in decline, while the southerly species A. rhombifolia is thriving. By correlating underlying genetics with health of current wild stands and performance of progeny in common gardens, this study will shed light on the role of genetics, particularly interspecific hybridization, in the adaptation of alders to changing environmental conditions.
