Investigating the reliability of species circumscriptions among polyploid taxa in Mentzelia section Trachyphytum (Loasaceae).

Mentzelia section Trachyphytum (Loasaceae) is a polyploid complex of 25–30 species found primarily in the western United States. Species delimitation and reconstruction of evolutionary relationships within Trachyphytum have been difficult due to continuous morphological variation and sporadic introgression. Previous studies have suggested that a combination of morphological and geographical data is sufficient to identify recognized taxa under most circumstances. Here we phylogeny reconstructions of polyploid specimens with known chromosome counts based on DNA sequences from the plastid trnH-psbA, trnS-trnG, trnS-trnfM, ndhF-rpl32, and rpl32-trnL regions to investigate to validity of species circumscriptions among widespread polyploid taxa in Trachyphytum.
