Introduction to Scientific Computing: A Crash Course.

Next generation sequencing and rapidly growing biological databases have provided unparalleled opportunities to produce massive datasets to address biological questions. However, to effectively and efficiently analyze these large datasets requires proficiency in scientific computing skills including command line interface, installing and compiling software, and basic scripting. In this full day workshop, I will provide a hands-on introduction to linux command line, linux Coreutils for processing and analyzing files, different methods for accessing and compiling/installing scientific software (e.g. OS package managers, GitHub, directly from source code, programming language specific repositories), and an introduction to Python scripting. By the end of this workshop you will have a scientific computing environment setup on your laptop and an introductory understanding of the computing tools required to effectively analyze large datasets. To participate in this workshop, you will need your own laptop with a version of linux installed (e.g. Ubuntu) or MacOS with the ability to connect to wired/wireless internet depending on what is available.
