Systematics Harris, Jesse [1], Shaw, Joey [2], Morris, Ashley B. [3]. North American Clematis: An investigation into phylogeny, taxonomy, and biogeography. Clematis (Ranunculaceae) is a horticultural and medicinally significant global genus comprised of ca. 300 species, with ~ 30 species in North America. This genus has long been fraught with problematic field identifications that have lead to much confusion about morphological variation and ecological requirements for many species. Previous molecular studies have revealed low genetic variability among many species comprising the North American subgenus Viorna that may indicate a recent rapid radiation event. We propose a method of high throughput sequencing of 17 nuclear loci and 8 non-coding chloroplast loci of all North American taxa to better resolve variability that may have gone previously undetected. This will greatly improve our ability to investigate species boundaries, detect possible cryptic species, and to document potentially vital haplotypic/genotypic variation that will better inform the management of endemic species of conservation concern.
