A new classification of Indian Crotalaria (Leguminosae) based on morphological and molecular markers.

The genus Crotalaria (Crotalarieae, Papilionoideae, Leguminosae) with main centers of diversity in Africa and India, is characterized by the presence of simple–trifoliolate to multifoliolate leaves, rostrate keel, monoadelphous anthers, presence of stylar trichomes, inflated pods, reniform seeds and pyrrolizidine alkaloids. Its high level of endemism, especially in section Calycinae, is intriguing. Earlier taxonomic revisions of the genus in India were based only on morphological characters. The sectional and sub-sectional circumscription of the genus is ambiguous because of the reticulations present between the species complexes. Present work is an attempt to provide an updated infrageneric classification of the Indian Crotalaria using five universal markers and with the maximum sampling (78%) of species. Plastid (psbA-trnH, matK, trnL-Leucine, trnL-trnF intergenic spacer) and nuclear ribosomal (ITS1/5.8S/ITS2) DNA sequence data were used to infer the evolutionary relationships and revising the Indian Crotalaria. Six hundred sequences of Crotalaria were subjected to phylogenetic analyses using Bayesian, likelihood and parsimony approaches. Congruency of all the markers were tested and concatenation was executed, which resulted in a matrix of 5567 characters and 602 sequences including the outgroup. The phylogeny resolved into 11 major clades. Five sections, 12 sub-sections and 89 species are recoginzed for Indian Crotalaria. We provide in-field key to sections, sub-sections and species. This study has resolved the circumscription of the species complexes within the genus and has provided an up-to-date classification of the genus Crotalaria in India.
