Title: Cutting the cord – a workshop for computer-free presentation skills.

“Giving a talk” or “preparing a lecture” has become synonymous with putting together slides in presentation software such as PowerPoint or Keynote. However, the power of these tools cannot replace good fundamental presentation skills, and indeed may even detract from your message. In addition, computer-less “chalk-talks” for seminars or interviews are gaining popularity. For people used to working with presentation software, going computer-free can be a challenge. Planning for pacing is important when you have to draw and write everything out while you talk, and visual components must be stream-lined. However, understanding how to work with just a marker and whiteboard will help you refine your message to its most essential components. In this workshop, we will provide tips for effectively communicating information in a chalk-talk and give examples of what to do and what not to do. Finally, participants will get a chance to plan and practice a brief presentation of their own, and get feedback in a friendly environment. This workshop is for anyone who wants to become less dependent on computer-based presentation tools, or just polish their presentation skills in general.
