Revisionary Florula of Anthurium Section Cardiolonchium in Carchi Province, Ecuador.

Studies and collections of plants in the Neotropics continue to reveal novel information about various species, which is important for informing conversation efforts and understanding the biodiversity of the tropics. However, the diversity and distribution of many tropical species, including those in the family Anthurium, are not yet fully known. As part of the National Science Foundation’s Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program, we have constructed a revisionary florula of Anthurium section Cardiolonchium in Carchi Province, Ecuador, using specimens collected over a series of past expeditions to the area. By describing collected specimens and using taxonomic methods to compare them with known species, we have described in our work 34 total species from Carchi Province: 9 which were previously published, 14 newly named, and 11 new currently without names. In addition, we have also written a dichotomous key with which these species may be identified, so that future collectors in this region may study Anthurium species with clarity and confidence.
