Next Generation Research Uses of Biodiversity Collections.

Come learn about and share your ideas for next generation uses of biodiversity collections data. How can these data be integrated with other data and samples to advance science and inform decision-making? What questions can we now ask and answer because of prior efforts to digitally capture and make publically available these data? Nearly seven years ago the biodiversity community united around a 10-year plan to build a Network Integrated Biocollections Alliance (NIBA). This effort led to the establishment of the Advancing Digitization of Biodiversity Collections program at the National Science Foundation, has stimulated efforts to digitally capture and mobilize collections data, and has led to new community partnerships that are driving efforts to sustain current digitization initiatives. The Biodiversity Collections Network is an NSF Research Coordination Network grant to the American Institute of Biological Sciences to foster additional community engagement in biodiversity collections digitization and to identify and stimulate future research and education uses for biodiversity collections. In January, BCoN convened a workshop to evaluate community-wide progress toward the goals of NIBA and to begin considering future research opportunities. Come learn about what was discussed at this meeting, and share your feedback to help inform next steps. This session will feature a summary presentation of the report from the BCoN workshop and open discussion with the community.
